How to Prepare Your Trees for Storm Season

Arborist assessing a mature tree before storm season

By the time a storm warning is issued, it's too late to do much about the tree leaning over your roof. Storm damage prevention starts long before the wind picks up — with a professional look at how your trees are built and how they'll handle severe weather.

Start with a tree health assessment

Weak branch unions, deadwood, decay, and unbalanced canopies are the failures we see most after a storm. A tree health assessment identifies these risks while there's still time to address them calmly — instead of as an emergency cleanup.

Reduce the load before the wind does

Structural pruning and wind load reduction thin and shape the canopy so wind moves through the tree rather than pushing against it. Removing hazards — dead limbs, cracked branches, poorly attached growth — takes the most likely failures out of the tree before the weather finds them.

Support trees worth keeping

Not every weak tree needs to come down. Cabling adds supplemental support to valuable trees with structural weaknesses, letting you keep a mature tree that would otherwise be a risk.

And when damage does happen

If a storm gets ahead of you, we handle the cleanup safely — fallen limbs, hanging branches, and damaged trees removed with a clean site when we leave. Green Guard Tree Care provides storm damage prevention and cleanup across North York, Caledon, Orangeville, Brampton, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket.
